Endometriosis Diagnostics & Treatment 

There are four different types of endometriosis, each named for the location, amount and depth of the lesions.

Superficial endometriosis - also known as peritoneal endometriosis, it is found mainly on the thin film that separates the pelvis and the surrounding organs.

Ovarian endometriosis - this is where endometriosis cysts are found on the ovaries.

Deep endometriosis - this is found at a deeper level than superficial endometriosis, in locations like the bladder, bowel and recto-vaginal septum.

Extra-pelvic endometriosis - is when endometriosis is found outside the pelvis.

Endometriosis is a long-term condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows in other parts of the body, often around the pelvis. It can cause chronic pelvic pain, heavy or irregular periods, pain during sex, fatigue, and even fertility issues. Diagnosis often starts with a detailed consultation and may include pelvic exams, ultrasounds, or MRI scans. In some cases, a laparoscopy (a keyhole surgical procedure) is needed for a definitive diagnosis. Our specialists use the latest diagnostic tools to provide fast, accurate results.

This saliva-based test offers a less invasive way to check for endometriosis compared to Laparoscopy. Results typically take around 3-4 weeks.

If the test is positive, further laparoscopy may be required for treatment. Although some women can opt for medical management instead.

Your GP will offer help and support in your first consultation - this may include treatments that can be used immediately.

A pelvic MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a non-invasive imaging scan that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed images of the pelvic organs, including the uterus, ovaries, bowel, bladder, and surrounding tissues.

Yes, a pelvic MRI can detect some forms of endometriosis, particularly moderate to severe disease. It is especially useful for identifying deep infiltrating endometriosis (DIE) and endometriomas (ovarian endometriosis cysts).

However, a normal MRI does not rule out endometriosis.

Yes, you can. Endometriosis is recognised as a chronic condition that can cause severe, debilitating pain - well within the legal framework for warranted absence. You can self-certify sick leave for the first 7 days, and after that, a GP or specialist can provide a sick note for endometriosis.

Anti-Inflammatory Diet:
Focus on fruits, veggies, and omega-3s; limit red meat and processed foods to help manage symptoms.

Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy:
Great for managing chronic pelvic pain, muscle spasms, and bladder/bowel issues.

Stress Management:

Yes, many people with endometriosis can still get pregnant, but the condition can make it more difficult. Endometriosis can affect fertility by causing inflammation, scarring, or damage to the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or uterus. However, with the right treatment and support, many individuals with endometriosis go on to have successful pregnancies.
