What is the male menopause?

What are the male menopause symptoms?

When women go through the menopause, there are a series of distinct changes which take place due to ovulation ending and hormone production decreasing. Men do not go through such a distinct process as this but a decline in testosterone which occurs as men age which can cause a range of physical, emotional and mental issues.

As well as a decline in testosterone, some men experience symptoms that include:

Erectile dysfunction
Loss of muscle mass
Irritability
General fatigue
Sleep disturbance
Problems with memory
Problems with cognition (learning, memory, perception & problem solving)

How is male menopause diagnosed?

The Consultant Urologist at Pall Mall Medical will perform a physical examination and discuss your symptoms with you. They will then take a series of blood tests, which will include measuring your testosterone levels.

Can male menopause be treated?

If changes in mood and physical appearance or other symptoms are caused by lower testosterone levels then testosterone replacement therapy may help with symptoms such as a reduction in libido, depression, and fatigue. There are side-effects to hormone replacement therapy, so it’s important to discuss your options thoroughly with an expert before embarking on treatment.

The consultant may also recommend certain lifestyle changes, such as a new diet or exercise programme, medication, such as an antidepressant, to help with some of the symptoms of male menopause.
