What is a sexually transmitted disease or infection?
A sexually transmitted disease (STD) or a sexually transmitted infection (STI), are passed from one person to another through sexual activity or contact. Usually as a result of vaginal, oral or anal sex. Some STDs, such as herpes and HPV can be spread by contact with the skin.
Symptoms of STIs and STDs
Certain infections have mild or no symptoms. However, there are symptoms that may indicate an STI. For example; Sores or bumps on the genitals or in the oral or anal area, burning urination, discharge from the penis, unusual vaginal bleeding, pain during sex and strange smelling vaginal discharge.

It can be difficult to discuss sexual health issues. So, you may prefer to see a private sexual health consultant. You’ll be able to have a full and open discussion with one of our consultants who will be understanding and supportive. They’ll also treat everything with complete discretion and in total confidence.
If you want a fast result, you can have an Instant STD/STI or HIV test. It uses a finger prick of blood or a swab sample and is taken at our clinics with results in just 20 minutes, whilst you wait. Our GP or nurse practitioner will give you the results in person making this an extremely discreet option
What instant STD/STI tests can I have?
Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV, Syphilis, Herpes (HSV I & HSV II) A discount is available on all bookings with more than 1x instant test taken during the same appointment. Any second or additional instant tests you add, cost only £50 (exluding HIV, available for an additional £70) when booked with any other test.
What to expect
A sexual health specialist will discuss your concerns or any symptoms you may have. You’ll be asked a few simple questions about when you last had sex and if it was unprotected. If you may have an STI you will have an examination. You’ll be treated with respect and in complete confidence.

How can I book a consultation?
You can book a consultation with one of our Nurses without a referral from your GP or the NHS. Simply call our booking team on 0161 394 0314 or complete the enquiry form on this page and request a face-to-face, telephone or video consultation. We don't have any waiting lists and offer flexible appointment times and extended opening hours, including weekend appointments and evening appointments after school/work hours.
Private sexual health medical insurance
We work with all the major private medical insurance providers. This means you may be able to cover the cost of this service by using your medical insurance policy. You should always contact your insurer before booking an appointment. Your insurer will check that your policy covers this service at Pall Mall Medical and they can pre-authorise your treatment. You'll need to provide us with your insurer details and pre-authorisation code when you get in touch.
