Allergies
Many children develop allergies in infancy or childhood, which may interfere with day-to-day activities such as bathing, play and sleep. Some allergies, especially those which trigger skin conditions such as eczema or hives, can be very painful and debilitating, other allergies, such as nut or shellfish allergies can be life-threatening if not managed correctly.
Childhood allergy is now a significant problem for children and parents across the country.
Different allergies produce a range of different symptoms and these can point to what type of allergy a child is suffering from. However, for many children, it is not always clear what the trigger is.
- In some cases, medical problems such as Coeliac Disease can be mistaken for an allergy.
In addition, allergy test results can be difficult to interpret in children and shouldn’t be done in isolation. A positive test doesn’t necessarily mean your child is allergic.
The first step in treating an allergy is to find out what could be causing the allergy, this could be anything from pet hair to dairy products, depending on the individual. If you suspect that your child’s symptoms may be caused by allergy, it is important firstly for your child to have a full and detailed health assessment by an experienced Paediatrician and then a decision made regarding allergy testing or otherwise.
At Pall Mall Medical we offer a specialist children's allergy test where we screen for popular allergens with quick results, enabling you and your Consultant to agree a treatment plan without delay, including knowing which substances your child should avoid in future.
Paediatric Rheumatology

Children’s rheumatology looks at common problems with rheumatic diseases which often involve swelling and inflammation in the joints or muscles. Rheumatology issues are diagnosed by a range of tests including a physical examination by a Consultant Paediatric Rheumatologist, ultrasound scans, MRI scans and blood tests. Treatment will depend on the specific condition but can include physiotherapy, pain management and anti-inflammatory medication.

Juvenile arthritis

One of the most common conditions treated by paediatric rheumatologists is juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) where joints become inflamed and painful due to an autoimmune reaction resulting in  joint swelling, restriction and stiffness. Treatment for JIA includes medication, such as anti-inflammatory drugs and immunosuppressive drugs, exercise and physiotherapy.

Juvenile dermatomyositis

This rare condition causes symptoms such as muscle weakness and rashes in children. It’s an autoimmune disease which means the immune system attacks healthy cells in the body which damages the cells and causes the symptoms of juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM). Symptoms of JDM can be managed with immunosuppresive medication and physiotherapy.

If your child is affected by any of the above conditions or similar rheumatology problems then book a consultation with one of Pall Mall Medical’s Consultant Paediatric Rheumatologists.
