A reaction to certain foods can result in a range of symptoms.

Signs and symptoms of food allergies

Experiencing a strong reaction to certain foods can result in skin rashes, itching, breathing problems and gastroenterology problems, amongst other symptoms. In some cases, the reaction can come on so strongly and quickly that it could be life-threatening without the correct medication. When a reaction is this strong, the condition is known as a food allergy. When the reaction to certain foods is less severe and the symptoms display themselves more gradually, this is known as food intolerance.

If you are experiencing symptoms such as bloating, gas, stomach cramps, diarrhoea, constipation or skin conditions such as eczema, then you could have an intolerance to certain foods. Although not as serious as a food allergy, being intolerant to certain foods can cause debilitating conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease and long-term skin conditions, if the offending foods are not identified and eliminated.

We have experience of delivering 5 star services to over 10,000 patients every year.

This is why our patients rate us Excellent on Trustpilot.

Frequently asked questions

Find the answers to common queries about food and allergy testing at Pall Mall.

Learn how we diagnose food allergies, interpret symptoms, and deliver fast, comprehensive results through expert-led testing and care.

What food allergies can I be tested for ?

We provide comprehensive food allergy testing to identify reactions to specific foods you’re concerned about or to common allergens like dairy, gluten, wheat, yeast, alcohol, nuts, and fish. This personalised approach helps identify your triggers for effective treatment and management.

How does the test work?

A Blood Test is the main way we test for a food allergy. With a Blood Test, our experts will look for a reaction in your blood to certain foods, which may indicate an intolerance.

A full history of your allergy symptoms will be taken to gain a thorough understanding of what is most likely to be causing them. Depending on the results, we may recommend you follow an elimination diet to confirm which foods are causing a reaction.

What are common symptoms of an allergy?

You may feel a number of symptoms or a range of common disorders including IBS, abdominal (tummy) distention, flatulence, skin problems, eczema, acne and psoriasis, joint and rheumatic pain, asthma, headaches and migraine, and many other general medical conditions.

Can I get tested for allergies on the NHS?

Yes, the NHS offers allergy testing but getting tested through a private provider like Pall Mall offers faster access, as there are no waiting lists and you don’t need a referral from your GP.

How long does an Allergy Test take?

The consultation and test typically take 30–60 minutes, depending on the type of testing required.

When will I get the results of my Allergy Test?

The test you undergo will determine how long it takes to get your results. We’ll be able to get some test results back to you within 24 hours, while others, such as the ALEX2 Allergy Test, take up to five days.
