X-rays were a major medical breakthrough. They made it possible to look inside the body without the need for an operation. And to help surgeons operate more precisely and successfully. Some of the common reasons for having an X-ray are to detect broken bones and fractures, damage to bones from arthritis and for lung infections.

Why book a private x-ray?
Whatever your reason for needing or wanting an X-ray, one thing’s for sure, you don’t want to have to wait weeks to have it. And unfortunately, that’s often the case if you’re referred for a X-ray, by your doctor through the NHS. So, whether it’s to further investigate a medical condition, to resolve a sports injury that’s not getting any better, or because you want to check out your general state of health, you can arrange a private X-ray at Pall Mall without a referral or having to wait. You’ll also receive a report from your radiologist with your results. Or if you prefer it, the results can be sent to your doctor, having saved time and taken some of the pressure off the NHS.
Before, during and after your scan
There aren’t any special preparations you need to make on the day of your scan. It’s a good idea to avoid wearing clothing that has metallic or plastic parts as this may mean you won’t have to change into a hospital gown for your X-ray.

How safe are X rays?
/How will I know if I am getting the radiation dose that is needed and no more?
The benefits and risks of the intended examination or procedure will be considered, and the possibility of using other methods that do not involve radiation exposure will be explored. The examination will be performed with the minimal radiation dose. This requires achieving adequate image quality while keeping the exposure as low as reasonably achievable.
How much radiation is acceptable?
There are no prescribed limits on radiation doses to patients. This means that no amount of radiation is considered too much for a patient when the procedure is justified by the doctor. The doctor will consider the benefits versus the risks.
How do I know if the X ray facility is safe to perform the procedure?
The X ray equipment is maintained by qualified staff and periodically tested. Radiation safety includes management of the doses patients are exposed to.
What alternative investigations are available that do not use X rays or radioactivity?
Ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) do not use X rays or radioactivity. Ultrasound is useful for examining the pelvis and abdomen, particularly in pregnancy, and for the breast, testes and soft tissues of the neck and limbs. Where available, MRI is increasingly used for scanning the head, spine and joints.
