What can a consultant Cardiologist help with?

There are many different heart conditions which can cause very frightening symptoms, these include:

Arrhythmias

These abnormal heart rhythms can cause rapid or fluttering heartbeats, dizziness, fainting, and weakness.

Heart Valve Disease

This disease causes the valves in the heart to work incorrectly and people with this condition are likely to experience shortness of breath, dizziness, palpitations and pressure to the chest.

Congenital Heart Defect

A heart defect is usually diagnosed in children but some people don’t receive a diagnosis until adulthood. If you experience a shortness of breath, especially if it interferes with your ability to exercise, combined with symptoms of heart failure (such as palpitations, dizziness, and fatigue) then this could be caused by a congenital heart defect.

Coronary Arteries Disease

If you are suffering from this condition, you will likely experience symptoms of angina such as a heavy, painful feeling in the chest. This condition is caused by plaque building up in the coronary arteries which restrict the blood flow to the heart.

Cardiologists can help prevent illnesses such as the above from worsening and resulting in life-threatening conditions such as heart attacks.

If you have been unfortunate enough to suffer from a heart attack then our private cardiologists can help you to regain your health and help to prevent another attack from occurring in the future.

Signs of heart problems

Heart disease symptoms depend on what type of heart problem you have.

Coronary disease

Coronary artery disease symptoms may be different for men and women. For instance, men are more likely to have chest pain. Women are more likely to have other signs and symptoms along with chest discomfort, such as shortness of breath, nausea and extreme fatigue. Cardiovascular disease can sometimes be found early with regular health checks.

Heart valve problems

Heart valve problems can be caused by a number of things leading to the valves narrowing, leaking or not closing properly. The heart has four valves, the aortic, mitral, pulmonary and tricuspid valves, that open and close to direct blood through your heart.
Depending on which valve isn't working properly, valvular heart disease signs and symptoms generally include; fatigue, shortness of breath, chest pain, irregular heartbeat and swollen feet or ankles.

Abnormal heartbeats

Abnormal heartbeats symptoms can include a fast heartbeat, a slow heartbeat, chest pain, shortness of breath and dizziness or fainting. Other heart conditions include; heart defects that you’re born with (congenital heart defects), diseased heart muscle and heart infection These conditions will have symptoms such as shortness of breath, swelling of the legs, ankles and feet, fatigue and an irregular heartbeat.

Why is seeing a cardiologist so important?

It’s important to book a private cardiologist appointment if you’re experiencing any symptoms of heart disease.

In extreme circumstances, a heart condition can be a matter of life and death. Thankfully, your body has ways to warn you if something’s not right. At Pall Mall, we can quickly and easily book you in for a consultation with a fast test turnaround. We’ll use a variety of diagnostic methods to get to the root cause of any heart-related problems you are experiencing, offering help and guidance to put your mind at ease and get your health back to top shape.

If left unchecked, heart conditions could escalate to potentially life-threatening levels, such as cardiac arrest, so it is recommended a cardiologist is seen at the first sign of any heart-related concerns.

No matter the heart concern you’re facing, the Pall Mall team is here to help - even if simply for a checkup. Book a private consultation with a skilled cardiologist today.

When should you see a private cardiologist?

If you are experiencing any heart-related concerns, have a family history of heart problems, or just want peace of mind, you may want to consider consulting a private cardiologist who can run the necessary checks to ensure you’re in good health.

The below can be warning signs of heart disease, which is more easily treated when detected early. In fact, an estimated 115,000 cases of heart and circulatory disease cases could be prevented before 2028 if the warning signs are caught early enough. If you have any concerns or a family history of heart-related issues, we have cutting-edge methods to diagnose what is causing the problems. If needed, we will refer you to our private diagnostic centre at our hospital in Newton-le-Willows.

Some of the heart conditions our private cardiologists can help with

There are many root causes and types of heart conditions that can affect the way that your body functions. Being such a vital organ, it’s important that you seek professional help should you be experiencing any pain or irregularities.

Here is a brief overview of some of the heart conditions we can help with. Should you wish to seek further advice, book your appointment with a private cardiologist today.

Arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms)

Heart arrhythmias, also known as heart rhythm problems, are when the body’s signals to the heart do not function correctly, causing the heart to beat too fast, too slow, or simply irregularly.

Whilst this can feel harmless, heart arrhythmias can escalate to potentially life-threatening symptoms - if you have any concerns, it’s vital you seek medical help immediately.

Arrhythmias can be a sign of:

  • Heart block
  • A breakdown of the body’s natural pace-making functionality
  • Damage from a heart attack or heart failure

If you’re experiencing a consistently slow or fast heartbeat, chest pain, or shortness of breath, our consultants can help you get to the root of the issue. These symptoms often initially present as a slight discomfort, but arrhythmias are linked to sudden cardiac death, which can be prevented when properly investigated.

At Pall Mall, our private cardiologists will diagnose through the use of cardiac scans to confirm the type of arrhythmia, using this information to decide the most suitable treatment plan. As there are a number of treatment options available, we’ll discuss the next best steps depending on the type, cause, and severity.

In some cases, the next step may be no more than a lifestyle change (such as a diet plan or stress reduction) or prescribed medication. In more serious cases, a pacemaker implantation may be recommended to keep your heart on a regular beat.

Your private cardiologist will select the most suitable treatment option to prevent the heart arrhythmia from escalating into something more serious. Leaving an arrhythmia unchecked is not advised, so do get in touch if you have any concerns.

Congenital heart defects

Congenital heart defects

Congenital heart defects are a type of birth defect, which affects the structure of a baby’s heart during pregnancy. Congenital heart defects can be diagnosed during or after pregnancy, but thankfully, these defects can also be easily managed with support from a private cardiologist, allowing those affected to live long, independent lives.

When treating a congenital heart defect, there are several factors that must be taken into account. As the type of heart defect can vary greatly, the treatment options will be customised to suit the needs of the patient.

What type of treatment will you need?

Many heart defects do not require surgery, and simply checking up with a private cardiologist to monitor the condition of the defect will be enough.

Heart valve disease

Heart valve disease is a condition where the heart valves do not function as they should, either not opening or closing correctly.

There can be several causes of heart valve disease:

  • Valve abnormality at birth (congenital heart disease)
  • Rheumatic fever
  • Infection (for example, endocarditis)
  • Damage from a heart attack
  • Ageing
  • Cardiomyopathy (disease of the muscle)

Cardiomyopathy is one of the more common causes of heart valve disease. It is a genetic condition usually (but not always) seen in younger patients where the heart muscles can become unusually stiff, thick, or thin, which affects the functionality of the heart valves.

Whilst cardiomyopathy cannot be fully cured, treatment can vastly improve the quality of life of those affected. A private cardiologist at one of our North West clinics can perform a diagnosis using an electrocardiogram (ECG) test, and then check heart valve functionality through an private echocardiogram (ECHO) screening.

The different cardiomyopathy diagnoses

When diagnosing cardiomyopathy, there are several potential diagnoses our private cardiologists can give, again, using an echocardiogram heart screen.

The symptoms of the different types of cardiomyopathy are all similar, manifesting as chest pain, fatigue or shortness of breath – but a private cardiologist will be able to detect the exact type of cardiomyopathy and proceed to the necessary treatment plan.

Don’t ignore the symptoms. Reach out to a private cardiologist today on 03300 27 26 51.

Heart valve disease treatments

Treating a heart valve defect depends on the root cause, and what specific problems the heart valves are experiencing in pumping blood. Less severe cases of heart valve disease can be treated by specialist medication, or by making lifestyle changes.

Angina treatment

Those with reduced blood flow will suffer from angina - a tight, dull chest pain. If angina is your primary symptom, treatment is available through nitrate medications, which widen the blood vessels of the heart, improving blood flow.

More serious cases, such as cardiomyopathy, can require more involved treatments, such as surgery.

Restrictive cardiomyopathy

Private cardiologists can perform restrictive cardiomyopathy treatment, which can bring patients significant relief. This can make living with restrictive cardiomyopathy more manageable, and reduce the risk of more serious conditions developing at a later stage.

Dilated cardiomyopathy

There are both medication and surgical options available for dilated cardiomyopathy treatment.

At Pall Mall, we also provide expert outpatient care following surgery to ensure that you remain comfortable with the device, as well as checking for risks of other conditions developing.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is a condition where a patient’s heart muscles thicken, obstructing blood flow to the heart. In this instance, both medication - for example, beta blockers - and surgical options should be considered.

If medication options are not providing the intended relief, surgical options are available, or a device similar to a pacemaker called an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator can also be implanted.

Through a private cardiologist, the best treatment options can be explored and customised to put you on the road to recovery.

Coronary artery disease/heart disease

Several conditions that affect the functions of the heart are described as heart disease - the most common of which is coronary artery disease, which is one of the main causes of a heart attack.

Coronary artery disease

This condition happens when substances like cholesterol build up in your arteries and restrict blood flow to the heart (which is why it is so important to keep an eye on your cholesterol levels) - this is called atherosclerosis.

Common symptoms of coronary artery disease:

  • Consistent heart pain or discomfort (angina)
  • Light-headedness
  • Nausea or breaking out into cold sweats
  • Pain or discomfort in the arms or shoulder
  • Shortness of breath
Peripheral artery disease

Another common heart disease is peripheral artery disease, which affects the arteries in the arms and legs, rather than those around the heart.

Common symptoms of peripheral artery disease:

  • Hair loss (particularly on on your legs and feet)
  • Numbness or weakness in the legs
  • Unusual leg pain
  • Brittle, slow-growing toenails
  • Ulcers on your feet and legs, which are slow to heal
  • Changing skin colour on your legs, such as pale blue or a shinier complexion
  • Erectile dysfunction (men only)
  • Unexplainable shrinkage in leg muscles
Diagnosing heart disease conditions

When investigating heart disease conditions, a private cardiologist will typically start with an atherosclerosis diagnosis.

Some people are genetically predisposed to heart disease, so it is common for any family history of heart disease to be explored, as well as if any lifestyle factors are involved, such as smoking, diet, or exercise. Usually, this is followed by a blood test to check cholesterol or blood sugars, with high levels being indicative of atherosclerosis.

If the results indicate a high likelihood of atherosclerosis, a heart scan and/or an echocardiogram will be carried out by your private cardiologist to check for the location of blocked arteries.

David, Pall Mall Cardiology Patient

Treatment for heart disease conditions

Making lifestyle changes such as increased exercise or dietary changes can sometimes be all that is necessary to treat atherosclerosis, and a private cardiologist can help plan any changes needed to be made.

If the condition is more serious or persisting despite lifestyle changes, the private cardiologist may make medication recommendations. These include:

  • Statin medication: to lower cholesterol levels in the blood, which reduces atherosclerosis build up
  • Blood pressure medication: to alleviate the more severe symptoms

Together, these treatments should reduce the symptoms and risks present from peripheral artery disease, and continued support from a private cardiologist will prevent the condition from escalating again.

For more advanced cases of heart disease, surgery may be advised

Coronary artery disease can present a high risk of cardiac arrest, so immediate surgery options may be presented by a private cardiologist to lower these risks.

Coronary artery disease treatment is often in the form of coronary angioplasty, which is a minimally invasive surgery, however in In certain cases, coronary artery bypass graft surgery will need to be performed.

Managing high-risk conditions

When suffering from high-risk heart conditions, a private cardiologist will always be available to help you manage it, with same-day appointments, on top of standard follow-up appointments.

It is recommended to see a private cardiologist regularly when at high risk of heart complications. Your private cardiologist will perform a variety of standard tests to ensure your treatment plan is working as intended, as well as talking you through treatment options to consider in the future.

At Pall Mall, one of our private cardiologists can assist you if you have recently suffered from cardiac arrest or a heart attack, providing a tailored treatment plan and aftercare. Regardless of whether there is a known heart condition or not, a cardiac arrest diagnosis will be performed following a collapse to find the cause and treat as appropriate.

Do I need a heart scan? When are scans carried out?

If you suspect you are currently experiencing heart difficulties, your private cardiologists will recommend you take a heart scan. Scans are carried out in the diagnosis to identify the type and severity of the heart condition, as well as during the treatment process to monitor the effectiveness of the prescribed treatment.

At Pall Mall Medical, we have a wide variety of heart scans available at our cardiology consultation appointments, designed to give you clarity and peace of mind regarding your heart condition and best next steps for you to take.
