‘prevention is better than cure’
Who Should Book a Health Check?
As we grow older, we begin to focus more on our health. A pain here or an ache there often causes us to seek medical attention.
Sometimes we begin to feel fatigued or run down and this makes us concerned, leading us to get tests or investigate further.
Whilst we might well be perfectly healthy, our body also has an uncanny knack for hiding illnesses and conditions until they're quite advanced.
As such, even if you are feeling perfectly healthy right now, there is a need for health testing, as it is an excellent way to ensure you stay that way. As the old saying goes, ‘prevention is better than cure’.
The need for preventative care is critical, as it can treat illnesses or conditions that are in their infancy and stop them in their tracks, meaning you can rest easy knowing that they're under control.

What Happens at a Private Health Check?
A private health check consists of a full body physical examination that aims to confirm you're healthy, and works towards helping you more easily stay that way.
There is a real need for private health checks such as these, as they can detect hidden illnesses before they take a hold of your body and begin to affect its capacity to work correctly. Even if you are not experiencing any symptoms, routine check-ups are still recommended - with more regularity depending on your age - just to ensure your inner health is ticking along as it should.
If you’d like to book a health check, our state-of-the-art clinics are conveniently located in the heart of the North West - Liverpool and Manchester city centre and Newton-le-Willows.
There are also more tailored screenings that can assess you for specific concerns you’re facing - for example, perhaps you experience breathlessness on occasion, or perhaps you know you drink a little more than you should.
In which cases, you might want to look into:
- Heart screening and alcohol tests
- Lung tests and lung cancer screening
No matter your medical concern, we have a range of advanced tests and screenings that will help you to identify the root cause of any health concerns you’re experiencing.
Once these tests are undertaken, there will be continued health monitoring to see how your health is progressing and to ensure the preventative plan of action we have put in place is working for you.

Your Private Health Check with Pall Mall: What to Expect
A private health check is an excellent way to take control of your health, and here at Pall Mall, we want to make sure that you’re given the utmost level of care from the second you set foot through our clinic doors.
Every health check is different, depending on the type of concerns that are raised, but to give you an idea, here’s what the typical patient can expect.
Whether you are worried about specific symptoms or simply want some peace of mind, Pall Mall is here for you. Get in touch with our expert team on 03300 27 26 51 today.
Questionnaire
After checking in at the main reception, a member of our friendly staff will ask you to complete a health questionnaire.
What will we ask you?
- Whether you smoke
- How much you drink
- The kind of diet you follow
- Daily activity level
- General fitness
After that, we will need to ask you some questions regarding your medical history. This lets us know what conditions you may already have and also what illnesses you may be predisposed towards.
Consultation and Physical Examination
Once we have all this information, you will get a consultation with one of our friendly and qualified doctors. Everything you discuss with the doctor will be treated in the strictest confidence so if you have any worries you would like to discuss, you can feel safe to do so.
You will then be given a full body examination. This is painless, simple, and carried out with the highest level of professionalism.
Tests Carried Out Using State-of-the-Art Diagnostic Equipment
The doctor will then perform a number of further tests. These will normally vary depending on what kind of private health screening you have opted for. You may be offered a CT scan to examine your blood vessels, for instance. If you’re a female and you’re worried about breast cancer, we may offer you cancer screening options.
Your personalised report
Once this is all completed and we have fully analysed your results, you will get a personalised report showing if and where we have discovered any health concerns.
Follow up appointment
You will then be booked for a remote appointment (a video or phone call, whichever you prefer) with one of our doctors, who will carefully go over our findings and discuss what courses of action are open to you.
Very often, as you are arriving at our clinic as a perfectly healthy individual or someone with only minor ailments, these recommendations will revolve around treatment or lifestyle changes that will prevent any abnormalities from developing into something worse.
If anything truly concerning does reveal itself in your health analysis, we can catch this quickly and treat it fast, ensuring it doesn't go on to cause you any significant problems.
What happens after a health screen?
Based on the findings of these tests, a personal health plan will be developed to ensure you can rectify any issues that have been found. You will likely be offered to come in regularly for health analysis and monitoring tests to keep a close eye on your condition and to see how well preventative treatment is working.
If there still seems to be some problems, your personal health plan may be modified to ensure they are brought under control.
Basically, by having regular private health checks, you are investing in you and your family's future. By preventing illness before it sets in, you are ensuring you can work, enjoy life, and be there for your spouse and children for longer. As such, private health checks are well worth their money.
At Pall Mall, you will have access to some of the best health diagnostics available. You’re welcome to visit us at any one of our luxury private health clinics, any time you wish.

What Can a Private Health Check Help Prevent?
The need for a private health check is ever more important in the modern era. Modern medicine is enabling many of us to live longer and this gives us hope of enjoying life well into our old age. However, if you haven’t looked after your body during your youth and middle age, you may have an increased chance that hidden illnesses will become chronic or even life-altering as you enter your later years.
If you want to ensure you live a long and healthy life, we highly recommend you pay us a visit. We have four main sites, all of which can provide you with your first private health check or any follow-up appointments that are needed. These include our clinics in Manchester, Liverpool, and Leeds, as well as our private hospital in Newton-le-Willows. All these sites offer state-of-the-art facilities and can provide some of the best private care you will find in Britain.
Depending on what kind of preventative health screening options you have chosen, a private health check can help prevent a whole host of major illnesses and conditions by picking up on the early warning signs.

Stroke
There are two main types of stroke: ischaemic and haemorrhagic.
Ischaemic stroke is caused by a blood clot interrupting the blood supply to the brain. This kind of stroke is the most common, accounting for up to 85% of all strokes.
This is where the need for health screenings comes in. With the right tests and scans, which we at Pall Mall can easily provide, we can spot warning signs before it's too late.
At Pall Mall, a health screening can help detect early signs of stroke by:
- Providing blood tests to check cholesterol levels
- A 24-hour blood pressure monitor to check your blood pressure isn't too high
- Several heart-related tests to ensure that your heart is functioning correctly
- Tests for C-reactive protein (CRP) as this can be a warning sign for strokes
- Tests for diabetes (this condition can significantly increase your chance of suffering a stroke)
- Performing an MRI scan or ultrasound to look for blood clots, meaning that you can feel reassured that there isn’t already a problem within your body
Even better, many of the tests we do to look for blood clots and potential ischaemic stroke risk will also highlight if you have a higher risk of a hemorrhagic stroke, meaning they can help to prevent both kinds of this debilitating event.
Kidney Disease
Kidney disease is an exhausting, chronic condition in its own right. It can cause long-term health issues, such as:
- An increased or decreased need to urinate
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Fatigue
- Sleep problems
- Muscle pains
The problem with kidney disease is that the early warning signs are often barely noticeable and the early stages are often silent, so the need for diagnostic testing is more important than ever.
We can perform a simple blood test that will test for kidney function. We may also do other tests and scans to confirm that you are in the clear or to work out a treatment guide.
By finding any abnormalities, we can catch any kidney problems you may have and stop them in their tracks.
Heart Disease
According to the British Heart Foundation, heart disease and other circulatory illnesses account for up to a quarter of all deaths in the UK each year. This is the equivalent of 460 deaths a day or one person every three minutes. Currently, there are 7.6 million people knowingly living with one of these illnesses in Britain.
For many of these people, they won't have known they had this illness until it was too late. If they were lucky, they may have felt breathless or found themselves struggling, causing them to go to a hospital and get treatment. However, by this stage, the disease is advanced and there is not much that can be done but to try and slow it down.
Sadly, for many people, the first sign they get of this illness is a heart attack. This tragically may end their life before they have a chance to alter their lifestyle or take any medication.
Heart disease doesn't let itself be known in the early stages, meaning your arteries could be silently furring up and narrowing inside you whilst you happily go about your life. This is why there is a need for early detection of health issues like heart disease.
So, how can a private health check help prevent heart disease?
At Pall, we can offer you:
- Instant access to 24-hour blood pressure monitoring
- Perform the following to check out how your heart functions in a range of different ways:
- Echocardiogram (ECHO) heart screen
- Stress Echocardiogram (ECHO)
- Electrocardiogram (ECG) heart screen
- Stress Electrocardiogram (ECG)
- A cardiac CT scan to check for your calcium score, showing us what deposits are already in your arteries and how narrow they have become
All these tests can help us see how healthy you are at the moment, and advise you on your next options.
By catching any problems before they become symptomatic, you have a good chance of living a longer and healthier life.
Type 2 Diabetes
Diabetes is on the increase in the UK. According to Diabetes.org.uk, 3.8 million people are currently diagnosed with the disease.
Individuals managing diabetes may have to avoid certain foods, take certain medicines, or inject insulin. You may also have an increased thirst, feel tired all the time, or find that wounds don't heal as quickly as they used to.
All in all, it is a condition that needs to be carefully balanced to keep it under control and avoid side effects like a diabetic coma.
Type 2 diabetes can also lead to other medical conditions like:
- Heart disease
- Stroke
- Sleep disorders
- Cancer
- Obesity
- Dyslipidemia
- Peripheral neuropathy
- Hypertension
Pall Mall offers a series of diabetes services, including a professional oral glucose tolerance test. This test will highlight if your body is already showing signs of difficulty when processing sugars.
Dementia
As we are all living longer, it seems inevitable that dementia is on the rise. As highlighted by Alzheimers.org.uk, 1 person every 3 minutes is diagnosed with some form of dementia.
However, there are preventive steps that you can take to reduce your chances. Dementia itself is incurable, but if you look after your general health, you can put the odds better in your favour.
A private health check can test for things that may eventually lead to dementia, such as:
- Furring of the arteries
- High blood pressure
- Heart disease
- A predisposition to having a stroke.
By controlling these conditions early or stopping you from getting them in the first place with preventative care, we can help to keep your risk of dementia as low as possible.

Is a private health check worth it?
With money being tight nowadays, you may be wondering whether you really need a private health check. After all, isn’t that why we have a national health service - to get free healthcare when we need it?
Whilst public healthcare is an admirable sector, it is unfortunately strapped for cash and is not functioning as well as it should be. Furthermore, strike action, COVID-19, and an increase in an ageing population have all combined with a chronic shortage of staff, resulting in a system that cannot always serve us as well as we would like it to. Adding to its troubles, problems in the social care system mean that some people can’t leave hospital even when they are fit enough to do so.
With this kind of working environment, public healthcare staff cannot always give the one-to-one attention that you need. In fact, you might find:
- Waiting lists that last weeks (even months) to see a GP for an appointment
- Overworked GPs who may prioritise simply getting through each patient
- Delayed results due to backlog & busy labs
Amy Reddish, Pall Mall Patient
Health peace of mind is priceless
If you do have a healthcare worry, then the chances are you may have real difficulty in navigating the public healthcare system. This lack of access to healthcare can be very costly to your health.
Delayed action on diagnosing and treating diseases like heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and dementia can lead to a worse prognosis and even, tragically, early death.
Why private health checks matter
If you invest in private healthcare, none of these problems exist. Instead, you can expect:
- Health screening tests when you want it, where you want it
- No waiting lists - a GP or consultant can be available as soon as you need them
- Flexible appointments, meaning that if you need one on a specific day or even at the weekend, then this is no problem
- The private specialist will have plenty of time to talk to you, will work with you on a one-to-one basis, and will explain to you each step for your personalised health plan
Private health checks at Pall Mall will be made available at your convenience, with a remote follow-up appointment to further put your mind at ease and fully discuss the findings.
The importance of early detection
Early detection of diseases and ailments is critical when it comes to preventing long-term or irreversible damage to your body.
Once a blood vessel is nearly blocked, you cannot unblock it. Likewise, you cannot reverse a heart attack or stroke. Once it's happened, it's happened.
As such, early detection can be the difference between life and death. It can mean living a healthy, long, fulfilling life instead of a life full of hospital trips, taking medicines, and feeling too ill or worried to enjoy yourself.
When you look at it this way, you can clearly see the need for health assessments on a regular basis. Preventative medicine can really be your lifesaver.
For example, monitoring your arteries at an early stage, where plaques are only just beginning to form, can mean we can stop heart disease and stroke in their tracks. We can offer treatments and lifestyle changes to prevent inflammation and severe narrowing of the arteries, giving you many more years of healthy life.
Likewise, if we catch kidney or liver problems before they take hold, we can ensure that these organs do not get damaged beyond repair and continue functioning correctly for years to come.
Without looking for illnesses, you have no idea what is happening deep within your body. Just 'feeling okay' isn’t always a reliable enough metric to go off. A professional health check offers a glimpse inside you to make sure you are as well as you think you are. It also offers the opportunity to rectify things if you're heading down the wrong path.
