What happens during Otoplasty surgery?

From your first call or email, we’re here to look after you. Whether you’re researching about the procedures available to correct your ears and would like more information, or you’re ready to meet a surgeon to see what results you can achieve, our patient co-ordinators are here to help.

Consultation

The consultation process involves the surgeon examining your ears and then starting the journey towards correcting them. This will involve a conversation regarding the shape and size you’d like to achieve and to understand why you’d like the procedure. The surgeon will also explain the surgery process, what results to expect and any risks that may be involved.

Pre-Operation

The Pre-Op element of your operation involves you coming into our clinic where you will meet your nurse who will conduct a medical health check so that we can assess if you are fit and healthy for surgery.

All patients undergo MRSA checks and some may have to do a blood/urine test.

Crucially for the procedure, we will take photographs of your ears for our medical records. A nurse will then be on hand to answer any questions you might have, as well as providing a point of contact for the intervening time until your operation.

Surgery

We are well aware that having such personal surgery can have a big effect on a person and therefore we want to reassure you by saying that feeling anxious is perfectly normal!

On the day of the surgery, you’ll arrive at our private hospital and be warmly welcomed by your nurse. The nurse will then take you to your room where you can prepare and relax before the surgeon arrives.

There will be a discussion about what to expect from the operation as well as a final consent form to be signed and a general check on your health. Once this is dealt with the operation will be performed in theatre under general anaesthetic and will take around 2 hours.

Post-Surgery

You won’t be required to stay overnight but we do require you to come back to the clinic three times over the next six months so that we can take further photographic evidence of the progress, but most importantly make sure you are happy with the results and have no concerns.

Aftercare

We have a comprehensive post-surgery after care program which will allow you to not only come back to the clinic as often as you like for progress checks on your ear correction surgery and the results. you will also be given a 24 hours , 7 days a week phone line number  which will connect you to our team of nurses if you have any concerns Post surgery.

What is Otoplasty ear correction surgery?

An otoplasty is often referred to as ear correction surgery and is very common amongst patients of all ages – often starting from very young ages.

Prominent ears (sticking out) may appear overly large, causing people great deals of embarrassment, distress and psychological pain. From an early age, people may be teased about their ears and the procedure is something they think about for years and years.

Sadly, the NHS rarely funds the procedure, meaning many patients have to either wait a long time for action or live in unhappiness. The otoplasty procedure corrects and repositions the ears to reduce the protrusion or prominence. Surgeons can either reposition one ear or both ears by varying amounts.

It is done as a day case, typically under local anaesthesia taking about 30-60 minutes in theatre, depending on whether one or two ears are adjusted. Some patients prefer general anaesthesia – which can be discussed with the surgeon during the free of charge consultation.

Why do people choose ear correction surgery?

For some people, the ears grow much faster than other parts of the body, meaning that the ears appear much larger, in proportion to their face. This can cause great psychological pressure on children and young adults. In some cases, even when a person’s growth has concluded, their ears still appear larger than the rest of their face, continuing the emotional distress.

Whilst there isn’t an exact number, research shows that people with ears more than 15 degrees away from their head deem their ears as noticeable!

The otoplasty procedure is a procedure that can address the above issues and allow you to feel more comfortable without the need to grow long hair or wear hats & headgear!

What are EarFold treatments?

The EarFold Treatment is completely unique and has revolutionised options for ear correction surgery. Pall Mall Cosmetics is one of the earliest adopters of the technique and work with one of the few Surgeons in the country who is able to perform the treatment.

EarFold Treatment is an alternative to the surgical Otoplasty procedure and has proven to be extremely popular with men, women and indeed children.

The main benefits are that it does not require any surgery, no anaesthesia (other than tiny amounts of numbing cream) and patients can typically return to work the next day! In addition, patients can choose the exact position of the ear before the final suture is made – meaning the desired outcome can be achieved to a high level of accuracy.
