Stacey Bates, Implant Replacement Patient

What is breast implant removal/replacement surgery?

Implant removal or an ‘explant’ of breast implants can help women who no longer want to keep their implants. There are various reasons that women consider removing their implants, some may want them removing for health reasons, while others might want to have them removed for aesthetic purposes.

If you are looking for implant replacement surgery, our surgeons can perform a breast re-augmentation procedure, which involves replacing your old implants with new ones. We see lots of women who want to replace their old textured implants with a smooth or light-weight implants. This can be the ideal option if your implants have reached the point when they need replacing or you wish to update the appearance of your breasts with a change in size, shape or position.

If your breasts have changed due to pregnancy, weight loss or the natural process of ageing, a breast implant removal and uplift (mastopexy) could be a way to restore volume to your breasts. During this procedure, implants will be removed but not replaced. Instead, your tissue is tightened and lifted for smaller breasts with a more appealing shape.

If you have any concerns about your implants you can discuss them during a free consultation with one of our surgeons.

Breast Enlargement surgery at a glance:

Exercise: We know you might miss your workout routine, but it's important to rest and let your body recover for 6-8 weeks.
Time off Work: To give your body plenty of time to heal, we suggest taking a break from work for 1-2 weeks.
Time in Hospital: Great news! You’ll be able to go home the same day as your surgery.
Driving: Please avoid driving for a week.
Final Results: You can be confident in seeing results within the next 3 to 12 months.
Post-op Bra: (Implant Replacement) Wearing your post-surgery bra for 6 weeks will help your body recover comfortably.

As Seen on TV Chelsea Robinson's Implant Replacement

Chelsea, 29, visited Pall Mall Cosmetics for Breast Implant Removal and Replacement with Mr Prasad. The influencer and TV personality is best known for appearing on Ex on the Beach and recently featured on the new ITV series The Price of Perfection.

After becoming a mum, Chelsea found her confidence had taken a hit. Chelsea shared, “Due to the excess skin from having my child and breastfeeding, I just felt by getting a bigger implant it would boost my confidence again.” She had previously had implants, but as time passed, they no longer gave her  the full, lifted look she wanted.

To restore volume and shape, she worked with Mr Prasad to choose 925cc implants - a size that would match her goals, and give her that boost she was looking for.

This kind of surgery requires precision and experience. It typically involves removing the existing implants and scar tissue (if needed), reshaping the breast pocket, and placing new implants that align with the patient’s goals.

Pre-Operation

It’s important to us that everyone undergoing surgery is fit and healthy. during a pre op appointment, one of our nurses will examine you to make sure you are medically fit enough for surgery. This includes checking all patients for MRSA as well as preforming blood/urine tests.

Surgery

On the day of your surgery you will be taken to our industry-leading private hospital in Newton-le-Willows. Once you’re settled into our spacious room with en-suite, the surgeon will check in to make sure you’re fit and prepared for the surgery. The procedure is done under general anaesthetic and lasts between 60-90 minutes.

During the surgery, the surgeon will make a discreet incision under your old scar, however there a number of methods you can choose which will be discussed with you in advance.

Post-Surgery

After the surgery, patients tend to be able to go home on the same day, but in some cases may need to stay over night. Post surgery your breasts may appear swollen or discoloured, however, over time the incision lines will fade and the results will gradually improve over the next six months.

Don’t worry though, our Patient Experience team here will be keep in touch and invite you to come into the clinic multiple times over the next six weeks to ensure everything is progressing as expected.

Frequently Asked Questions.

Our expert team is always on hand to help, advise and arrange appointments with our specialist consultants.

How long is recovery after breast implant removal surgery?

Recovery after the removal of breast implants is generally shorter than the recovery after the original enlargement surgery, and you can also expect less discomfort this time around. Obviously, every patient is different, and this won’t necessarily be the case for everyone.

Although you may not experience significant discomfort, it is worth keeping in mind that you have still undergone a surgical procedure and it is important that you don’t rush straight back into strenuous activity.

Will I be able to talk to my surgeon/nurses after breast implant removal surgery?

Make sure you take care of yourself after the surgery and we’d recommend taking a week of work. Here at Pall Mall, we have an industry-best aftercare programme which gives you comprehensive cover after your surgery.

Feel free to come into the clinic as often as you like and we will provide you with 24/7 access to our Nurse. Additionally, our surgeons and nurses will keep in touch to ensure you are happy with the outcome of the Impact Removal.

What to expect following your breast implant removal surgery

Following your surgery, it is quite normal to feel some minor pain and discomfort.

You will have been discharged with medications to take to help control your pain, follow the instructions given to you on your discharge.

If you have had general anaesthesia or sedation, this can temporarily affect your coordination and reasoning skills. It is strongly advised that you must not drive, drink alcohol, operate machinery or sign legal documents for 48 hours afterwards.

It is important you do not over stretch or lift during your recovery. Ask for assistance with dressing and allow the person taking you home to carry your bags.

You might feel tired or drowsy for the first few hours - this is related to the anaesthetic and medication given for the surgery.

You will have some pain and discomfort for the first few days - taking regular painkillers will help. Maximum discomfort will occur on the first few days. There will be some swelling and bruising around your operation site, the majority of this will subside in 6-8 weeks.

Can you drive after breast implant removal surgery?

You should not drive yourself home or drive for a minimum of 2 weeks following your surgery. You must be able to do an emergency stop safely without causing discomfort and be able to turn adequately to see blind spots. If you are in doubt about driving, contact your motor insurer so that you are aware of their recommendations, and always follow your surgeon's advice.

Can you smoke before breast implant removal surgery?

You should avoid smoking and using any nicotine products during your recovery as this will affect your body’s ability to recover and can delay wound healing.

You should also avoid vitamins and herbs for 10 days before surgery.

Should I stop taking my medication before my breast implant removal surgery?

Before your breast implant removal surgery, please inform staff if you take any other medications to minimise the risk of contraindications. Complete the full course of antibiotics if prescribed.

Take your painkillers as prescribed- try to take regularly for the first few days, avoid any aspirin containing drugs as they will thin the blood and increase the bleeding risk. Your normal bowel action may be disrupted following surgery, you may take a mild over the counter laxative if required.

What should I eat post breast implant removal surgery?

Fluids are critical following surgery. Stick with a light nutritious diet for the first 24- 48 hours. Following your surgery, it is important to eat foods high in protein and full of vitamins and minerals to help aid the healing process

What activities am I allowed to do after breast implant removal surgery?

Limit your activities for the first week to avoid unnecessary bleeding. However, do not remain immobile due to the risk of deep vein thrombosis- keep stockings on until you have returned to your normal mobility.

▪ You should avoid any strenuous exercise and swimming for at least 6 to 8 weeks.

▪ Avoid exposure of the breasts to direct sunlight/sunbeds for at least 6 months.

▪ Be sure to avoid vigorous or excessive stretching or lifting for 4-6 weeks

How long do I have to keep my dressing on after breast implant removal surgery?

Leave dressings intact until they are removed in the clinic. You will usually have dissolvable sutures in place - these will dissolve in a few months following surgery. It is common to have some blood strike through onto the dressings but if it appears fully soaked or leaking through, please contact your clinic for an early dressing change.

Avoid getting the wound wet until all the dressings are removed. After they have been removed only shower - avoid soaking your wound in the bath for 6-8 weeks post operatively.

How do you take care of your breasts after breast implant removal surgery?
  • Wear a suitable post op garment, day and night for at least 6 weeks, avoiding under wire. Adjust it to ensure it doesn’t rub on your incisions.
  • Follow your surgeon's advice on how long you should take off work.
  • Wear loose and comfortable clothing that will not rub on your incisions.
  • should be a minimal of 1-2 weeks depending on your job.If you notice any undue swelling, pain, bleeding, fever, or discharge from your wounds please contact your clinic.
  • Do not apply anything on your scars unless advised by your own surgeon.
What type of anaesthetic is used during breast implant removal surgery?

For this surgery you will be placed under general anaesthetic and monitored closely throughout the whole surgery. This is a controlled state of unconsciousness to ensure you don’t feel pain or move while surgery is being carried out.
