What are the different types of Zika virus tests?
The difference between the two Zika Virus tests is the window of detection from the onset of symptoms or potential exposure to the virus.
The blood test (Zika Antibodies IgG and IgM) is effective from 15 days of symptoms or potential contact with the virus. However, for earlier detection, we also offer a more advanced urine test (Zika by PCR), with detection from 1 to 14 days from onset of symptoms or potential contact with the virus.
During the consultation, our practice nurse can discuss which test is most suitable for you, dependant on these different stages or risk factors. You will have results back within 10 days of having the blood test (Zika antibodies IgG and IgM) or results back within 10 days of the urine test (Zika by PCR). Antibodies of the Zika virus should be present from 2 weeks of being exposed to the virus and the best method of detection depends on the stage of the disease.
We also offer a wide range of other travel health and diagnostic services within our clinics. For more information on these please visit our vaccines page here.
