A Tummy Tuck, also known as an Abdominoplasty, is a cosmetic surgery procedure designed to remove excess skin and fat from the abdomen, often tightening the abdominal muscles too. This surgery helps create a firmer, more toned appearance. While the results are often transformative, the recovery process requires careful planning and adherence to post-operative instructions. Pall Mall offers extensive support both before and after the procedure, helping patients prepare for their surgery and providing a two-year aftercare programme to ensure optimal recovery for the best possible results.

How to manage your Tummy Tuck recovery
To ensure your recovery goes smoothly, it's essential to follow your surgeon's advice and take the necessary precautions. Rest is crucial in the first few weeks, and you'll need to avoid any strenuous activity, especially anything that puts pressure on the abdominal muscles. Proper hydration with a healthy diet, staying hydrated and taking prescribed painkillers can also help you feel more comfortable. Avoid smoking and alcohol, as they can slow the healing process.
At Pall Mall, we provide comprehensive two year aftercare to support your recovery journey. This includes follow-up appointments, 24/7 access to our medical team as and when you need them, and detailed guidance on managing pain, caring for your incisions, and when it's safe to return to normal activities.
Tummy Tuck recovery timeline
Recovery after a Tummy Tuck varies based on individual health, surgery extent, and adherence to post-op care. Some may recover quickly, while others take longer. This general timeline offers guidance, but each experience is unique—always consult your surgeon for personalised advice.
Immediate post op (Day of surgery)
Mr Prasad, Consultant Breast Oncoplastic and Aesthetic Surgeon, shares his professional advice: “Right after your Tummy Tuck, you’ll wake up in a recovery room under the care of medical staff. You may feel groggy from the anaesthesia, and there will likely be some discomfort in your abdominal area. You will have a compression garment to help reduce swelling and support the newly contoured area. Pain is manageable with prescribed painkillers, and you’ll be given clear post-operative instructions to take home. Rest is crucial, and it’s advised to have someone accompany you to assist with movement during this initial stage.
First day post op
Mr Prasad added: “On the first day after surgery, you might still feel tired and experience mild to moderate discomfort. Pain relief medications will help keep you comfortable, but it's important to avoid any strain on your abdomen. It’s normal to feel a bit weak or lightheaded during this time, so rest is essential. You’ll be encouraged to start walking short distances to promote circulation and prevent blood clots, but any heavy lifting or strenuous activity should be strictly avoided.”
First week post op
Mr Prasad continued: “During the first week, swelling and bruising will likely be at their peak, and you’ll still need to rely on your compression garment to minimise swelling and support your abdomen. Your mobility will gradually improve, and light activity, like walking, is encouraged. However, most patients need assistance during this period, particularly with tasks that involve bending or reaching. Follow-up consultations with your surgeon will be scheduled to check on your healing and remove any drains, if used.” At Pall Mall, every patient who undergoes a cosmetic procedure has a follow-up appointment with a nurse seven days post-op to ensure a smooth recovery.
2 - 4 weeks post op
“By the end of the first month, pain and swelling will have significantly subsided, although you may still experience some discomfort. You’ll likely continue wearing your compression garment for up to 6 weeks. During this time, many patients are able to resume light activities, such as walking or desk work, but strenuous exercise or heavy lifting should still be avoided. Most patients will feel more comfortable and may even be able to return to normal routines by the end of the fourth week.” says Mr Prasad.
6 - 8 weeks post op
Mr Prasad explains: “At the 6-8 week mark, most patients will feel close to fully recovered and able to resume most, if not all, of their usual activities. You’ll have had at least two follow-up appointments by this point to ensure proper healing. While scars will be visible at this stage, they will continue to fade over time. Making sure to follow the Tummy Tuck scar guide, such as using silicone-based products, can help minimise their appearance.”
