Posture correction through breast reduction can not only improve your appearance - but is also a fundamental part of maintaining good health.
As well as providing a good structure that supports your body, a breast reduction can also help you to avoid many common painful problems that come about as you age.
As poor posture can affect the back, knees, and neck, as well as create issues throughout the musculoskeletal system, you might find that larger breasts exacerbate these issues. Here, the experts at Pall Mall have years of experience in helping.
Be it as a result of having larger, pendulous breasts or even low self-esteem, which can cause people to naturally stoop, we will talk you through your options to correct and improve your posture.
At Pall Mall, patients who choose to have their breast reduction surgery will get up to 2 years of aftercare as standard, giving you complete peace of mind from your free consultation to the new, and improved, you.
If you have any questions or queries, we’re here to help.
So, what’s the link between breast size and posture?
If you have larger breasts, the sheer weight of the breast tissue can trigger pain in the neck, shoulders, and back. This can certainly make it more difficult to maintain good posture, especially as so much front-centered weight can cause you to appear hunched and leaning.
In a 2016 study published in Surgical Technology International, researchers measured breast forces on the spine and reported:
‘Magnitude of forces generated by the breast to the thoracic spine ranged between 8.5 pounds of force for underwire size 30 to 110 pounds of force for underwire size 60.’
As such, it’s easy to see why the amount of breast tissue a woman has can impact her posture and overall health.
With this focus, another study monitored 22 breast reduction patients before and after their surgery. Before their reduction, all patients struggled with the following:
- Forward straining of the neck (cervical lordosis)
- Forward rounding of the upper spine (thoracic kyphosis)
- Inward curvature of the lower spine (lumbar lordosis)
After their breast reduction surgery, all 22 patients saw improvements in their neck and upper spine - with seven seeing improvements in their lower spine.
That’s where breast reduction surgery can help.
The benefits of breast reduction surgery
There’s not a clear path to confidence. But if you’re finding yourself with a natural ‘stoop’, or hunching over, you deserve to stand proud and feel comfortable in your skin.
Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammoplasty, removes fat, breast tissue, and skin from the breasts - giving them a smaller, more lifted appearance once they have healed and ‘settled’.
But for those with especially large breasts, breast reduction surgery can also ease discomfort and improve overall appearance, helping to improve your self-image and find physical activities, such as running, much easier.
The role of breast reduction in posture correction
As well as making you feel out of place and self-conscious, large breasts can also put huge amounts of pressure onto the back’s extensor muscles and discs, changing the shape of your spine.
All of these factors can cause pain and poor posture, especially for those who hunch to try and detract attention from their chest or to alleviate pressure on the spine.
Poor posture can also lead to undue strain on the neck muscles, which can cause spinal disks to become irritated - something that is likely to get worse with age if not rectified.
Reducing the weight of breast tissue relieves the pressure on the muscles in the back and neck and can restore a proper posture. This may help to relieve pain and discomfort in your shoulder, back, and neck.
